  • Most high school dropouts fail at least 25% of their ninth grade courses, while only 8% of high school completers do so (Letgers & Kerr, 2001).

  • Approximately one-third of the nation’s recent high school dropouts never were promoted beyond ninth grade (Neild, 2009).

  • Every percentage point of increase in a student’s attendance decreases that student’s odds of repeating 9th grade by 5% (Neild, 2009).

  • 40% of dropouts in low-income high schools leave after ninth grade (EPE Research Center, 2006).

  • Some states have as high as a 20% decrease in enrollment between ninth and tenth grades (Wheelock & Miao, 2005).

  • Close to 75% of high school dropouts reported that they first developed a disinterest in school as early as 9th or 10th grade (Azzam, 2007).
